Taking care of your Snowflake Baby
Storage and Handling :
Keep your new reborn baby out of direct sunlight (can cause fading), and in a cool place away from any open vents. Heat and extreme cold can be damaging to the vinyl. Be careful around pets and small children. Treat your reborn as if it were a real baby when you are holding it, you wouldn’t want to pop out a joint.
Do not over manipulate the vinyl (i.e. squish/bend the vinyl), it can cause the sealant and paint to crack and peel off. Acrylic paints adhere to the vinyl because of the sealant.
Also to keep in mind, is that sealants are not permanent. They will wear off, especially the more we redress and play with our vinyl babies. That's okay! Play with them as much as you like! But if you notice they become too shiny too often, or a spot of paint has gone missing then it might be time to reseal. I'm more than happy to offer touch up services for a small fee - contact me at anytime!
Cleaning :
To clean your reborn baby of dust, use a soft bristled brush to gently brush away the dust. If needed, you can use a damp cloth (no soap) to gently wipe away any dirt or oils - be sure to pat dry. To help prevent your baby from getting shiny, be sure to keep your hands free from oils and lotions when handling.
Though all of my babies have been matte sealed I highly recommend not getting your reborn overly wet. This is especially important for the body or near the eyes of open-eyed kits. I do not seal the eyes (unless requested), so that way you can change the direction of the eyes to your preference. As of 2017, I now seal ALL of my open-eyed kits! If your reborn gets wet, dry the surface promptly. If the body is wet, I recommend taking apart your reborn to thoroughly dry it.
Pacifiers :
Not all babies come with a pacifier; those that do are usually what I like to call – Putty Pacis. Putty Pacis are placed on the doll with white removable adhesive putty. I do not recommend leaving the putty on the doll for an extended length of time (especially while in storage). If there is a bit of putty left on the lips (or mouth) it is very EASY to clean up, because the putty likes to stick to itself.
If magnets were requested, please be careful around persons with pacemakers, computers, cell phones, credit cards, and other electronics. Caution should also be exercised around small children and pets. I highly recommend that any future magnetized pacifiers have a bit of soft fleece or felt over the actual magnet to prevent any paint or gloss from chipping.
Weighted Material (no longer applicable in 2017) :
I use either glass beads or (plastic) poly pellets, and sometimes both, to weigh the limbs. I then use poly-fill stuffing to keep it in place inside the limbs, and to stuff the body for a nice soft tummy. The beads/pellets are always wrapped (multiple times) in nylon to keep them in place when stuffed in the body.
Changing the Eyes:
There might come a time when you'll need or want to change out your baby's eyes. Always double check the kit's eye size! And always insert the eyes from behind the sockets (inside the head) as opposed to from the front. It's important not to squeeze, squish, or bend the vinyl when you replace the eyes because of the sealant - refer to the "Storage and Handling" paragraph above. I now seal the eyes, as of 2017, and do not recommend changing the eyes as the glue remover could leak onto the painting and remove the painting! It is at the buyer's risk to remove the eyes!
